In this paper, we will discuss the reasonableness of the decision by Italy and other southern and western EU states to become members of the eurozone. We will also discuss whether this economic choice can be socially and culturally sustainable in a Europe characterized by cultures which, despite their shared sub- stratum, are in competition with each other.
